If you’re a Medicare beneficiary in Southwest Washington, you may be wondering what happens now that the Annual Enrollment Period has ended. Each year, Medicare’s Annual Enrollment Period runs from October 15 through December 7, and once that window closes, many people are left asking the same question, “Okay, enrollment is over… now what?” The good news is that for most seniors, there is nothing urgent you need to do right now. If you reviewed your coverage and are comfortable with the plan you selected, or if you chose not to make changes, your Medicare coverage will automatically continue. Any updates you made will take effect on January 1, 2026.
For seniors in Clark County, Cowlitz County, Vancouver, WA, and the surrounding Southwest Washington communities, this time of year is best used for understanding rather than stressing. If you made changes during enrollment, those choices are already locked in and will carry over to the new year. If you didn’t make changes, that doesn’t mean you made a mistake.
Many people stay with their current Medicare Advantage, Supplement, or Part D plan because it still meets their healthcare needs, covers their doctors, and fits their budget. In those cases, no additional action is required right now.
Additionally, there is another Medicare Open Enrollment period that runs from January 1st – March 31st every year. During this enrollment period, if you are already enrolled in a Medicare Advantage Plan, you can switch to another Medicare Advantage plan one time during this election period. You can also return to Original Medicare and enroll into a stand-alone Medicare drug prescription plan. There are limited circumstances in which other changes to your Medicare Advantage plan may still be allowed throughout the year. These are called Special Enrollment Periods, and they are triggered by specific life events such as moving to a new service area, losing employer coverage, qualifying for specific assistance programs, or other significant changes in circumstances. Not everyone qualifies for a Special Enrollment Period, which is why it’s essential to understand the rules before assuming a change is possible. This is often where confusion sets in, especially late in the year, and why calm, accurate guidance matters.
Late December is also a smart time to review what you already have, even if you are not planning to make changes. Taking a moment to understand your current benefits, prescription drug coverage, provider networks, and expected costs for 2026 can help you feel more confident heading into the new year. Many seniors and caregivers in Southwest Washington use this time to organize documents, review medications, and note any changes in health needs that may affect future Medicare decisions. This kind of review helps prevent surprises later and makes the next enrollment period much easier to navigate.
